A classy, classic, simple bottle of wine. The bottle is black, no capsule, and a nearly-blank white label which says "THE BOY" in tiny text at the bottom-right. The back label has an interesting quote that Charles loves: "I'm the boy who can enjoy invisibility" from Serge Gainsbourg

Scores & Tasting Notes

Brilliant color and amazing nose. The entry is pure silk, red plum, cold ash, camphor and pine needles. It continues to unfold with complexity. Pain grillé, warm earth, gun powder. Exotic. Satisfying. Profound. –Winemaker Charles Smith

96 Points – Jeb Dunnuck (formerly of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate)

“Made from 100% Powerline Vineyard (since 2015), the 2017 Grenache The Boy Powerline Vineyard sports a lighter ruby hue as well as Rayas-like notes of decayed flowers, kirsch liqueur, licorice, and cured meats. Seamless, medium-bodied, and beautifully polished, with fine tannins, it’s a stunning, Burgundian example of this variety to enjoy over the coming 15-20 years. There are a little over 1,000 cases produced.”

93 Points – James Suckling

“This is a really intense red with white pepper, meat, grilled meat and red fruit. Green cloves, too. Full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Partial whole-berry fermentation. Drink or hold.”

90 Points – Vinous/Tanzer

“Light-medium red with a pale rim. Spicy red berries, red cherry, Espelette pepper and savory minerality on the nose. A bit less green, wild and olive-y than the 2016 version, this glossy, fine-grained midweight conveys modest nuance to its red fruit and spice flavors. Finishes classically dry, with suave, fine-grained tannins and slowly building length. This rather polite Grenache may have more energy to support aging than its 2016 predecessor, but will it ever be as interesting or wild?”

Vineyard – Powerline (100%)

Walla Walla Valley AVA, Washington State Red Wine (100% Grenache, 14.5% Alcohol)
A 30-acre Estate Vineyard planted in 2012 in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, just south of Walla Walla in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. The soils are well- drained with cobblestone river rocks and underlying layers of sand and gravel deposits, allowing vines to develop very deep and strong roots. The deep sand and silt below the stones bring a great purity to the grapes, while high elevations keep acids high and alcohol low, producing very well-balanced wines with remarkable complex characters.
The vineyards we work with are farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices.

2017 was a fantastic year for making wine with a cool spring and a fair amount of rain. Washington had an ideal spring for healthy vines. The moderate temperatures during summer were perfect for small clusters and yet delayed veraison into the fall where we had a consistent ripening season that allowed us to hang the fruit for perfect tannin and flavor without losing acidity or acquiring too much alcohol. Overall it was a vintage to remember.
