Scores and Tasting Notes

Penetrating color. Potpourri of aromas. Blackberry, plum and chanterelles continue to engage the palate. Forest floor, cured meat, black cherry and pine needles. Rich, engaging and oh so persistent. Complex to the max. Nothing is spared. – Winemaker Charles Smith

95 Points – Jeb Dunnuck (Formerly of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) (v2017)

“Coming from the Oldfield and Boushey Vineyards (basically the same vineyard), the 2017 Syrah Motor City Kitty Oldfield-Boushey Vineyard is slightly darker colored and, as with all the Rhones here, wasn’t destemmed and was brought up in mostly neutral puncheons. Blackberries, smoked earth, game, chocolate, and chalky minerality all emerge from this beauty, and it’s a powerful, full-bodied, concentrated effort that will evolve positively for 2-4 years and keep for a decade.”

95 Points – James Suckling (v2017)

“This is deep and flavorful with spice, meat, wet earth and a light, greenish note. It’s medium-to full-bodied, lively and flavor-focused. Drink now.”

93 Points – Vinous/Tanzer (v2017)

“Deep ruby-red. Spectacular wild nose offers most of the Syrah food groups: black raspberry, cured meats, olive, black pepper, coffee and a whiff of balsamico. Wonderfully silky yet penetrating, showing a restrained sweetness to its flavors of dark berries, herbs, olive tapenade and bitter chocolate. Boasts excellent inner-mouth tension and salinity but without any hardness; in fact there’s an almost unctuous quality to the wine’s silky texture. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins. This wine received an élevage of 18 months (relatively short for the K Syrahs) and still needs a year or two to mellow in bottle.”

Vineyard – Boushey Oldfield Block (100%)

(100% Syrah, Washington State Red Wine, 14.5% Alcohol)
Owned by Dick Boushey, one of the premier vineyard owners in Washington State. This vineyard was planted by Dick with the help of Brennon Leighton. This is the highest elevation plot and has a southwestern slope and sandy volcanic soils. Three clones of Syrah are planted on this site: 383, 174 and Joseph Phelps.

The vineyards we work with are farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices.

The 2018 vintage was incredible! This outstanding vintage began mild followed by a long and dry ripening season in the fall. This enabled us to hang the fruit to reach optimal ripeness without losing acidity or increasing sugars. The wines from 2018 are exceptional in many ways, from the great expression of the whites to the beautiful refinement and complexity of the reds. Enjoy!
