Scores and Tasting Notes

A labor of love is the Klein vineyard Bx. From the “wow” aroma to the powerful palate and the realization that this wine will age for decades. The descriptors: Black raspberry, mountain herbs, molasses, pencil shavings, green chartreuse, tar, cola, cigar box, cold fireplace ash, black currant, dive bar and sawdust. To drink is to believe. I’m a believer. –Winemaker Charles Smith

97 Points – Jeb Dunnuck (formerly of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate)

“The 2016 Klein BX Vineyard Collection checks in as 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 28% Cabernet Franc, all of which was co-fermented and aged 27 months in French oak. Coming from a 3-acre parcel in the vineyard, it’s a monster of a wine loaded with notions of blackcurrants, cassis, chocolate, spice box, tobacco, and scorched earth. It’s not for the faint of heart and is full-bodied, super rich, concentrated, and structured, yet it stays balanced, has a seamless texture, and is remarkably elegant for a wine of this size. It’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 15-20 years in cold cellars.”

98 Points – Jeb Dunnuck (formerly of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) (v2015)

“The 2015 Klein BX Vineyard Collection checks in as a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. Deep purple-colored, with a thrilling bouquet of crème de cassis, toasted spice, graphite, and dried tobacco, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, building yet sweet tannins, flawless balance, and a finish that goes on for over a minute. This is a tour de force in Bordeaux blends from Washington State that I wish every reader could taste. It’s already accessible, with a sexy, flamboyant personality, yet it’s going to keep for two decades given its balance and purity.”

93 Points – James Suckling (v2015)

“This has a forest-like nose with bracken, leaves, red berries, juniper and herbs, all interwoven. The palate has a sleek, graphite-like edge and dark berries are cast in forthright, muscular and intense tannins that hold uncompromising on the finish. A field blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc. Try from 2022.”

Vineyard – Klein (100%)

42% Cabernet Sauvignon; 30% Merlot; 28% Cabernet Franc; 14.5% Alcohol)
This vineyard is located at the Southwestern end of the Walla Walla Valley. It’s volcanic rock, with thin, wind-blown loess over basalt. The high elevation, 850 feet, means it doesn’t freeze and is a fairly windy site. This vineyard produces low yields and powerful, unique wines.

The vineyards we work with are farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices.

The 2016 vintage started early and warm in Washington State. When summer arrived, the season saw cooler evenings that helped retain acidity, extended the growing and ripening period into September and October. This allowed the fruit to gain more complexity and deeper charm without sacrificing the acid or producing higher alcohol content. The vintage has created deeply rich and focused wines that we will be able to enjoy for a long time to come.
